With a population of over 1.2 billion, India holds the spot as the second most populous country in the world. Of its billion citizens, over 75% live in small towns and villages that are heavily reliant on the local agriculture industry, resulting in the country being one of the top exporters of agricultural goods in the world. While this high amount exports has resulted in great strides being made to increase the quality of life for Indian citizens, the vast majority of those in the lower levels in the caste system are being left behind. Those in this lower class population are treated as second class citizens and, as a result, they face a large number of social and economic inequalities, especially the women and children. These inequalities directly translate into the women being forced to stay home to handle the house work and the children being needed to help tend to the crops rather than attending school, both of which lead to a population that is heavily uneducated.
Our goal is to create an opportunity for the helpless generation of youth and females in the rural areas of India to receive a better education in a safe environment. We have already created an education center where the students began their lessons and the women have been receiving training in sewing, computer skills, and even beauty parlor vocational training where they have the opportunity to receive certificates.
Reunion Heart is a non-profit organization that aims to bring a better education program to the poor women and children in the rural areas of India.
Of those affected by these many inequalities, the state of Bihar is arguably one of the most heavily affected. Bihar is the poorest state in India with a population of over 90 million inhabitants. Only about half of its citizens are literate while only one third of the population of women can read and write. This area is where the Reunion Heart Foundation believes it can begin to bring about position change. We are starting our journey in the village of Bodhgaya where the school system consists of a gathering of 120 children in a small dirt area from morning to afternoon. The school has no building, no running water, no desks, or any access to modern medicine. These conditions make it impossible for almost any summer sessions due to the amount of rain and strong heat.
Our Mission
Once the children are ready to move on from the elementary program, our goal is to provide the necessary financial resources to pursue a higher education in University. This will not only provide the children with the opportunity to secure a proper paying job, but will also give them the education they need to further fight for equality in all of India.
